Mission Report: Sonny’s Last Chemo

On June 21st the MidSouth Garrison’s Blue Sun Squad had the honor of escorting Sonny out of the UK Children’s Hospital to end his FOURTEENTH and final chemo treatment. Both his father and mother first met with Vader back in March during Sonny’s “Best Darn Star Wars Day Ever” event at Lexington Toy and Comic Con where they became instant fans. When the 501st Legion’s-MidSouth Garrison were asked to provide Imperial Escort for him on his way out of the hospital after his last five day treatment we came out in force. Troopers arrived at Sonny’s room to surprise him, play some games and scare his sister back into the bathroom (she quickly recovered and gave us some happy high fives). Fellow member Brian Bently TK 51200 (a cancer survivor himself), was in control of Sonny’s wheel chair all the way out of the building. Vader, officers and troopers provided back-up, fist bumps and more high fives. Once Sonny was safely in the car with his loot, balloon and posters we said our good-byes and watched him leave the hospital as a warrior. Way to go, Sonny! And thank you to both his Mom and Dad for asking us to be apart of another step on Sonny’s journey.

“My prayer is that years from now when Sonny looks back on this time in his life all he’ll remember are the cool moments like this one and not all the hard stuff he’s gone through. Thank you helping us find joy on the journey.” – Christina Cohen
